During World War II, traditional seating materials — rattan, seagrass, sea-weed — became scarce across Europe. Danish craftsmen, unwilling to compromise the quality of their work, turned to paper. Long, flat strips were tightly twisted into strong, flexible cord. What began as a wartime solution became something far more enduring: a material with its own name, its own identity, and its own devoted following. Today, Danish paper cord — or papirsnor in Danish — holds the rare distinction of being the only weaving cord in the world known by both a material and a nationality. High-quality paper — sourced today from FSC-certified sustainable forests — is cut into long, thin strips and tightly twisted, layer upon layer, into a three-ply cord. The result is something that defies its modest origins: surprisingly strong, naturally breathable, and comfortable in a way that improves with time. Unlike leather or fabric, paper cord does not trap heat. Its woven structure allows air to circulate beneath you, keeping the seat cool through long meals or long conversations. And unlike foam, it does not sag or lose its form. A well-woven paper cord seat can last up to sixty years — gradually deepening in colour, softening slightly to the body, becoming more beautiful with each passing decade. The natural cord is unbleached; the black is dyed. His CH24 — the Wishbone Chair, designed in 1949 — requires more than 120 metres of paper cord and over 100 steps to complete. Each seat is hand-woven, a process that takes a skilled artisan hours to finish. The lounge chair CH25 demands even more: approximately 400 metres of cord, woven over ten hours by an experienced hand. This is not production in the industrial sense. It is craft. If a cord loosens, seek a skilled weaver for repair rather than attempting to fix it yourself.
